Subject Definition


PE develops healthy lifestyles and personal fitness. It fosters an enjoyment of physical activity so that this can be continued throughout life. Our subject is about all students gaining the following:

Well-being – Developing a strong physical, emotional and social well-being

Healthy – Gaining knowledge of healthy active living that will last a lifetime

Skills – Acquiring transferable skills to succeed in sports, school and life

Performance – Aspiring to achieve your very best

Enjoyment – Finding fun through a rich and varied programme of sports and activities

Students are educated to develop a healthy body and healthy mind. It relieves stress and anxiety enabling them to cope with the demands and pressures of life. It balances with more classroom-based subjects and offers the opportunity to experience a more practical learning environment. GCSE PE and Sports Studies allows students to gain a qualification and the department’s results contribute to the whole school successes.

Physical Education gives students a sense of achievement and worth. It develops self-esteem and confidence as well as building resilience. Personal and social skills are developed through team work and building relationships is an integral part of taking part in sport. Through working closely with other students both at Woking High and other schools, students understand the importance of respect, courtesy and integrity. Organisational skills are developed due to the leadership opportunities on offer within lessons and working with local primary schools.

For some students, completing a course in GCSE Physical Education or Sports Studies enables them to gain a formal qualification. It also allows students to seek employment within the sport and leisure industry. Students can gain honours and recognition at all levels by representing their form, school, district, county, regional and national.

Studying GCSE PE will enable students to enjoy and understand the benefits of living a healthy and active lifestyle. They will acquire the skills to make informed choices about their own physical development, whilst getting involved in physical activities that meet their needs. They also learn how to analyse and evaluate performance, making effective plans for improvement.

 

KS3 overview

KS4 Overview

All students will have at least one hour of core curriculum Physical Education. Students will be able to choose from a variety of sports including football, badminton, dance, fitness, basketball, table tennis, trampolining, handball, dodgeball and netball. Groups will be mixed ability and students will be able to select a new sport each half term. Although new skills may be developed, the focus is on applying those skills and understanding into game situations or producing sequenced routines.

Students have the option to choose one of two examined qualifications. These are as follows;
