Student Wellbeing

In School Support

Each student will have a Tutor who will monitor their wellbeing on a daily basis and be first point of contact for families. They will also have a Head of Year who will oversee their academic and personal development. Each year group also has a Pastoral Coordinator whose role is explained below. 

Pastoral Coordinators

At Woking High School, the role of the Pastoral Coordinator is to:

-Support parents/carers, families and students on a wide range of issues;
-Help children and families increase school attendance and punctuality;
-Develop and maintain positive relationships and act as a link between the home and school.

The Pastoral Coordinator role is tailored to support the needs of your family and circumstances. We can help in many ways including:

-Enabling parents/carers and children to discuss concerns or worries in a secure and safe environment, with a flexible and open-minded approach;
-Support and guidance to students in times of change and stress, such as parental separation or bereavement;
-Help students struggling with lack of confidence or low self-esteem, are withdrawn or anxious;
-Assisting parents/carers whose children are reluctant to attend school or have been excluded;
-Offering parent/carer guidance and support on a wide range of issues or difficulties impacting on their family life e.g. illness, domestic violence, disability, financial difficulties, experiencing difficulties with child’s behaviour;
-Undertake home visits to support families/children;
-Work closely with other agencies and help families to access other services, resources and local community information to meet their needs;
-Offering support in school meetings and appointments;
-Help to fill out forms such as Free School Meals (FSM) and Early Help Support.

Referrals for additional in-school mental health and wellbeing support

We also have a wide range of in-house mental health and wellbeing support including our school counsellor and our Early Intervention Coordinator Team Lead. In addition, we have 2 trained Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSA’s), Mrs Helen Lodge and Mrs Leanne Whitfield. We also have our Child Wellbeing Practitioner, Mrs Stephanie Killgallon and our Engage mentors led by Miss Bissi Ollaye.

Referrals to the school’s mental health provision can be made through the Head of Year who will forward to our DSL team. All referrals are confidential and placed on a waiting list, which is prioritised in order of need. Parental permission is required for counselling to begin and a signed document is needed from the child and parent/carer. Sessions usually last for 6 weeks and are reviewed at that stage. If you are concerned about the mental health of your child, you should contact your GP to make an appointment as well as informing the Head of Year.
